Nhl 2008-09 Western Conference Preview

The Detroit Red Wings ran away from the pack last season to again win the President’s trophy and followed up with a Cup win. The power is clearly in the West in the NHL. Here is how the West shapes up heading into the 2008-09 campaign

The Division Winners:

1. Detroit Red Wings – The defending cup champions win the Central, the West, and the Presidents Trophy again. As hard as it is to believe, the Wings actually got better this summer acquiring prize free agent Marian Hossa. Ty Conklin was also added to back up starting goalie Chris Osgood. The only notable loss from the Cup winning team is future hall of famer Dominik Hasek, who was relegated to back up duty last season. The Wings will be led by Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk with Nicklas Lidstrom providing support from the blue line. The supporting cast is as good as any team in history. The Stanley Cup hangover, the Pacific powerhouses and aging stars

Chicago Blackhawks Tickets – Hawks Squawk To A Second Loss Before Break

The loss to St. Louis wasn’t just a loss, it was a clean sweep with St. Louis taking home 2 points and not allowing the Hawks to score at all. Of course, the Hawks don’t have to walk away angry with their holdings on 10th place in the league with 25 wins, 12 losses and 8 OTs. Moreover, the Hawks have fourth place nicely situated for themselves with San Jose, Detroit and Calgary ahead in the western conference where the Hawks have 58 points.

The active roster certainly isn’t marred by injured players on reserve. Active team forwards include Craig Adams, Dave Bolland, Troy Brouwer, Adam Burish, Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Martin Havlat, Patrick Kane, Andrew Ladd, Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Towes, and Kris Versteeg. Active team defensemen include Cam Barker, Brian Campbell, Nklas Hialmarsson, Aaron Johnson, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Brent Sopel, Matt Walker and James Wiesniewski. Spring brings Sporting Events

Spring is eventually here! With Spring comes flowers, green grass and sunlight and it brings us my fave sporting events. Big league Baseball starts with the New York Yankees defending their World Series Championship. All of the other groups will be attempting to chase the Yankees. Will this years surprise team be the Boston Red Sox, los angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago pups or the Cincinnati Reds? Will a heavy outside bet like the Atlanta Braves or Tampa Bay Rays or Minnesota Twins have a breakout year?

The NHL playoffs start and this year will the Pittsburgh Penguins defend the Stanley Cup or will the challengers come from a list that includes, The Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks or the Boston Bruins.

Does the winner come from the Big Ten’s Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan’s Wolverines, Michigan country’s Spartans or perhaps the Iowa Hawkeyes or Purdue Boilermakers will ultimately get over the hump. Can

Bird Control In Athletic Stadiums

by Alex A. Kecskes

Several years ago, during a Detroit Tigers home game at Comerica Park, 60 or so herring gulls descended on the stadium, dive bombing players and fans alike. Were they after the foot-long hot dogs?  The ketchup-drenched French fries? The roasted peanuts?  No way. They were gobbling up the recently hatched army moths fluttering about the stadium lights.

While in Comercia’s case, it was moths that provided the snacks, more often, our feathered friends will settle for leftovers provided by fans. It’s a scenario oft repeated in open-air facilities around the country. A stadium’s geographic location can also contribute to the problem. In Comerica’s case, it was their proximity to the Detroit River and several other large bodies of fresh water that accounted for the speedy invasion of gulls.

Throughout the country, annoying starlings, sparrows and pigeons have stadium operators on alert as they
